Civil Liberties

CEP is committed to protecting the Constitutional rights of citizens from unwarranted government intrusion, advocating for freedom of information and accountable government, and protecting and encouraging public participation in government processes and decision-making.

CEP exposed and critiqued Utah’s participation in the MATRIX data-mining program, resulting in the state withdrawing from MATRIX. The information CEP collected through government records access laws, coupled with the media attention created, had national impact on the future of MATRIX.

Working with private property rights advocates, environmentalists, and civil libertarians, CEP was instrumental in enacting legislation to curtail Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation (SLAPP).
