Nuclear Waste and Power

CEP advocates a long overdue overhaul of the nation’s laws and policies on the disposal of high level nuclear waste and low level radioactive wastes. We support a sustainable national energy policy that reduces reliance on nuclear power and emphasizes conservation and renewable energy sources.

CEP opposes high level nuclear waste disposal in Nevada and storage in Utah. We oppose disposal of Class B and C radioactive wastes at Envirocare of Utah and the sham disposal of LLRW as “alternate feed materials” at the International Uranium Corp. mill in Blanding, UT. CEP trustees have fought the Yucca Mountain Project since the mid-1980’s, and led a nearly successful effort to convince Utah’s U.S. Senators to vote against YMP approval in 2002. CEP trustees were among the first to oppose the Private Fuel Storage plan for temporary spent fuel storage and to support the dissident majority of Skull Valley Goshutes in the continuing battle to stop this project.
